Calling all South Dakota Middle School Students Students entering 7th and 8th grade in the 2025-2026 school year can participate in free, five-day residential career exploration camps this summer. Hosted on South Dakota college campuses, these camps expose students to various career paths through fun, engaging and hands-on learning. Throughout the week, campers will spend time with instructors, take field trips to area businesses, participate in interactive exercises and more, gaining a better understanding of themselves, their career interests and how their education prepares them for professions.

The USD Business Academy is an exciting, hands-on summer camp hosted by the University of South Dakota’s Beacom School of Business. Designed for high school students eager to explore the world of business, this camp offers a wide range of interactive sessions. Students will engage in dynamic presentations, participate in group activities, and hear from industry experts about their careers. Outside of learning, campers will enjoy fun activities like games, movies, and social events, all designed to foster teamwork and leadership skills in a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere. What is MyImpact Challenge? MyImpact Challenge is a civic engagement contest hosted by the Bill of Rights Institute. What is a Civic Engagement Contest? Our civic engagement contest highlights students actively engaged in service, volunteerism, or entrepreneurship in their communities. Who can Apply? Submission is open to students ages 13-19 in all U.S. states, territories, and Armed Forces Schools Abroad. When does the Contest Close? The contest is open until May 18, 2025, 11:59pm. All complete applications are judged and winners are awarded cash prizes!

Date: July 21-25, 2025 Location: SDSU Oak Lake Field Station Registration Due: May 31, 2025 The Natural Resources High School Program is a great way to gain exposure to the world of natural resources, including fish, plants, wildlife, soils, invertebrates and water. The Program offers opportunities to gain hands-on experiences in natural resource ecology and management. The Program is intended for high school students, entering grades 9, 10, 11 and 12, who have a strong desire to learn more about the natural world or who have an interest in pursuing a career related to natural resources. Permission of parent or guardian is required. Activities will be led by SDSU Department of Natural Resource Management faculty and graduate students. We will also have biologists personnel from natural resource agencies.

Science-loving juniors and seniors are invited to apply to represent South Dakota at the 2025 National Youth Science Camp (NYSCamp). This free residential camp for students from across the U.S. and other parts of the Western Hemisphere includes a curriculum across science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics, as well as many outdoor activities. Hosted in Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia from July 10 through Aug. 2, the NYS Camp program is designed to honor and challenge some of the nation’s rising STEAM leaders and provide them with opportunities to engage with STEAM professionals and participate in exciting outdoor activities. The NYS Camp is offered to selected participants at no cost – including meals, housing, and transportation – so that talented students may attend regardless of their financial ability. If you know a student who would benefit from this camp, please encourage them to apply. For more information about the program, go to nyscamp.org. The Cancer Unwrapped High School Writing Contest invites students to submit essays about their experience with cancer for the opportunity to win one of several $500 cash prizes. The HS Navigator Young Scholars Program strives to engage academically talented students with a strong desire to pursue careers in computer science and related areas. The program incorporates a lecture series, research exposure experiences, and networking opportunities. Participants will also get the chance to work on live projects on a variety of latest CS and modern fields. The opportunity itself is a remote 8-Weekend online program where every weekend will consist of 2-4 hrs webinars and labs on scheduled topics. Students can then create their own blogs or sites to help showcase the projects that they have made! This will be unique opportunity for all Middle and High school student who are not able to find any summer program in this pandemic time. Eligibility Open to juniors and seniors in U.S. high schools, including home-schooled students, as well as U.S. citizens attending high school overseas. Additional questions regarding eligibility may be emailed to essaycontest@thefire.org. Word Length Word Length Students must submit an essay between 700 and 900 words on the provided topic below. The SD Youth Trooper Academy takes place in Pierre from June 24-28, 2019 The 2021 South Dakota Youth Trooper Academy runs June 21 – June 25, 2021. Space in the program is limited to 24 students from across the state. Qualifications: The program is open to male and female high school students who are entering their senior year of high school or have just graduated high school in 2021 and have an interest in a career in law enforcement. Candidates must be in good academic standing with their high school. They must be of good moral character and present a well-groomed appearance. The candidates must possess a valid SD driver license. The Youth Trooper Academy is physically demanding; those requiring special diets or having physical needs will be looked at on a case by case basis. Cafeteria style food will be served. The program is open to all, regardless of race, color, gender, religion, or national origin.

Then rise to the challenge of cadet membership in the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol. The CAP Cadet Program is a year-round program where Cadets fly, learn to lead, hike, camp, get in shape, and push themselves to new limits. If you’re dreaming about a career in aviation, space, or the military, CAP’s Cadet Program is for you. To become a cadet, you must be be at least 12 years old and not yet 19 years old. Cadets usually meet 2 hours per week and one Saturday per month, on average, and also have opportunities to attend leadership encampments, career academies, and other activities during the summer.

Pilot Pen is continuing the G2 Overachievers Student Grant designed to reward and celebrate one exceptional young scholar (aged 13 to 19, in middle school or high school) who is making a difference in others’ lives outside of the classroom. One student grant winner will earn $12,500 to further their education and/or continue their good works. The winner’s school will also be awarded $2,500 to help enhance their efforts to foster student overachievement. Entrants are required to submit 1,000 to 2,500 handwritten words expressing how they, or a student they know, are working outside the classroom to benefit others. Submissions for the G2 Overachievers Student Grant will be accepted until December 31st, 2019.
